A Chest Massage to Alleviate Back Pain?!

Recently I have seen taxi drivers and people with desk jobs that have back and neck pain. One of the possible reasons is that they hunch over and reach forward to hold the steering wheel or to type on their keyboard. The body is designed to move and this position is not bad, however, if you are in the same position for many hours then problems can creep in. In these two groups, typically their upper traps will be tight as well as their rhomboids and serratus muscle groups. Simply put, the peri-scapula muscles, being the muscles around your scapula or shoulder blade become tight.

These muscles become tight because they are working at an extreme length, they are being asked to do a lot of work in the end range of motion, where they are weakest. This puts a lot of stress on the back muscles and causes little bits of muscular damage. All to be expected working in this position for a long period of time. The back muscles in this position will be stretched and so your normal posture will be of a more rounded back. So the muscles on your chest, being your pectoralis major and minor will by default be working in a shorter range of motion and become shorter. As the saying goes, use it or lose it. In this case, because the pec muscles are working in a shorter range, they don’t need to be long, as they pull on your scapula they will roll it forward. By rolling the scapula forward the back muscles are put on a further stretch and the cycle continues.

The resulting effect is longer, weaker and tighter back muscles, shorter and tighter chest muscles and pain. A sports massage can alleviate the pain in the back by; reducing tone and allowing the back muscles to relax, as well as reducing tone and allowing the chest muscles to relax. Combine this with some occasional stretching of the pecs and some occasional strengthening of your back and the pain could be eradicated for ever!
